Some stories don’t start with a wedding inquiry—they start years earlier, with a friendship that grows and evolves and sticks. I met Kenzie in college at UNR, and one of the first times I photographed her was for her graduation. Since then, I’ve had the honor of documenting every major chapter of her love story—from the early dating days with Dustin, to a “just because” couples session, to their proposal, a sneaky boudoir session, and finally their Hacienda de las Flores wedding.
Being her lifelong photographer? That fills my soul. Not just because she’s one of my best friends, but because she’s always believed in me—showing up with encouragement and investing in me as an artist. She’s the kind of friend who sees you, loves your work, and puts action (and money) behind her words. Photographing this day was more than work—it was a full-circle moment I’ll never forget.

A Love Story That Feels Like Fate
Kenzie and Dustin got married last August at Hacienda de las Flores, a Spanish-revival estate tucked into Walnut Creek, California. They chose the venue for its charm, convenience, and beauty—it’s all in one place, which meant no rushing around or added stress. Just one stunning location where everything could unfold naturally.
The vibe? Intentional, classic, and fun as hell. Every part of the day felt like them. There were nods to how they met in flight school (a vintage propeller for the guestbook, an airplane + “love is in the air” on their cake), but beyond the cute details, the day was just… full of heart. And honestly, it’s so special seeing your friend find someone who matches their energy and humor, who makes them feel safe, and who brings out their fullest, most authentic self. That’s what we all hope for. I’m so happy they found that in one another.
Ceremony Details I’ll Never Forget
Kenzie & Dustin also made some unique decisions when it came to their ceremony and I must say, they might be my favorite parts of their whole wedding day.
First off, the semi-circle seating was such a good call. Not only did it fit the physical layout of the space beautifully, but it also meant every guest had a great view of the couple. They had a small wedding party who didn’t stand up front—instead, they sat with the guests, which made it feel so intimate. Just Kenzie and Dustin up there, sharing their vows, having that moment completely to themselves.
Their officiant is from Canada and brought a fun little tradition with him: in Canadian weddings, the marriage license has to be signed during the ceremony to make it legal. So K & D incorporated that and had their witness come up mid-ceremony to make it official. It was such a cool, intentional moment.
And then… the rings. Instead of doing the traditional “ring bearer” route, their venue coordinator hid the wedding bands under a random chair before the ceremony started. When it was time for the ring exchange, they had the guest check under their seat—and surprise! Instant ring bearer. It was so much fun and such a creative way to include their people. Plus, it totally takes the pressure off choosing someone for that role. Just another little detail that made the day feel uniquely them.
The Best Kind of Wedding Energy
There was a moment right after dinner that’s been burned into my brain. The light was perfect and I asked, “Do you want to sneak out for a few more photos before the sun’s fully gone?” Kenzie hesitated—she was soaking up every moment with their people—but I convinced her to give me just five minutes.
We made absolute magic. That photo? It’s our shared favorite. Organic movement, relaxed joy, unfiltered emotion. It’s candid and warm and honest. It’s them—living in the moment, grounded in love, buzzing with the joy of their best day ever. (p.s. it’s the photo at the top of this blog)
BONUS: after the reception, we hit a local dive bar (shoutout to Roundup Saloon) and Kenzie sat on the bar in her wedding dress, all wifed up and in love and said, “I think everyone should sit on a dive bar in a $4,000 dress on their wedding day.” Iconic behavior.
